Duties and Responsibilities : PURPOSE:
The Department of Fine and Performing Arts (DFPA) seeks an Adjunct Professor of Music (Vocal/Choir). The ideal candidate demonstrates an ability to teach music (vocal, choral) as well as develop and participate in programs designed to enhance the experience of the music concentration through excellent teaching and creative curriculum development. Teaching duties include; general music courses and applied music with specific knowledge of courses including vocal literature and diction repertoire such as, and not limited to: Italian, German, French, and Spanish; courses in Solfeggio, African American (Black), and/or diasporic music and traditions, classical, contemporary music, choral, university choir, vocal, chamber music and other genres. Provides instruction and mentoring; engages in scholarship and/or professional creative work. In addition to teaching duty responsibilities, the candidate could possibly also serve as the Assistant Choir Director of the University Choir (TBD). These duties could entail conducting rehearsals, concerts, seminars, recitals, singing, arranging, and performances in conjunction with the University Choir Director, overseeing the maintenance of the choral music library, and choir uniforms for choral and university events, and recruiting for both the music concentration area and choirs. Other duties will include maintaining regular office hours. The successful candidate might be responsible for co-conducting the University Choir, Madrigal/Chamber Singers Ensemble or others as well as teaching private voice lessons. We seek an individual with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary teaching as well as an ability to work with diverse student populations with varying degrees and types of musical experience. Providing guidance and mentoring with students for internships, apprenticeships, and careers in the professional music and performing arts industry.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: In addition to teaching music courses, advising and service, duties include aiding students in selecting and learning music material from different eras of vocal repertoire as well as contemporary music theatre, African American music, folk, jazz, and/or classical repertoire. Directing Vocal Ensembles, teaching Choral Conducting, Sight Singing, Ear Training, and Vocal Performance. Proficiency in the Learning Management System, Blackboard (or similar) Online Learning Pedagogy is required, consistent with University guidelines and teaching various modalities: In-Person, Hybrid, Virtual, etc. Service on co-curricular audition panels, juries, recital committees, and other vocal-area activities as necessary is encouraged.
Requires the equivalent of a four-year degree and D.Mus.A., Ph.D., or Ed.D. preferred or M. M. in Voice or Choral Music (or related) is required.
Experience: Minimum three (3) years of successful undergraduate teaching experience are preferred. High School teaching experience will also be considered. Experienced and sensitive to working with students from diverse backgrounds, students with disabilities or special needs, and especially those at a Historically Black College or University.
Evidence of mentoring, training, and nurturing pre-professional singers of all voice types, with a commitment to access equity, diversity, and inclusion. Applied knowledge of current literature and contemporary research in vocal pedagogy, music, and performance practice. Experience teaching pre-professional singers in a variety of classical, contemporary, and related musical styles. A demonstrated an ongoing commitment to performing and teaching music composed by women, African American (Diaspora) and other BIPOC composers, and other historically excluded groups. Candidates with experience providing vocal coaching or musical direction for musical theatre productions are especially encouraged to apply. Teaching or performing experience in other vocal genres (Musical Theatre, Jazz, Classical, Black & Contemporary Music, and other Genres) swell as Music Education and/or Vocal Methods courses in Music Education is not required but also would be of great benefit. Experience recruiting a diverse range of talented applicants to collegiate-level music programs and for university choirs and ensembles. A record of creative and innovative artistic activities that expand the repertoire of the concert-music tradition, reach traditionally underserved communities and audiences, and engage the changing landscapes of musical culture. Professional experience with arts organizations of varying sizes, structures, and missions and grantsmanship is desirable. Experience in arts entrepreneurship, the professional music and performance industry, and creating or curating performance opportunities for oneself and others is also desirable. Additional areas of expertise are welcomed, but not limited to Research in Choral Music and Conducting; Community Ensembles; Multicultural Music; Music in an Urban Environment. Must be a team player, work cooperatively and collaboratively, and be focused on the student and program success.
