The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and the Faculty Program Directors of the MPA Program in Economic Policy Management (PEPM) and MPA in Global Leadership (MPA-GL), the Assistant Dean, Specialized Degree Programs, directs a comprehensive student services operation supporting degree seeking students in these programs including registration, advising, curriculum management, academic programming, and degree clearance.  The incumbent is the key liaison for students with all Columbia University offices and resources and is responsible for organizing and executing academic and community-building events for students in the programs and at SIPA. The Assistant Dean manages the administration and budget of both programs and assists with curriculum development and faculty recruitment.

Responsibilities

Student Academic Advising and Support for Boutique programs

  • Directs the PEPM and Global Leadership student services operation for approximately 75 students.  Duties include overseeing registration, orientation, advising students on administrative, curricular and financial aid matters, advising on policies, requirements, procedures, deadlines, etc., and facilitating effective communication between students, teaching assistants, and faculty on policies and procedures. 
  • Responsible for student information, reports, student communications (newsletters and outreach) and certification of degrees.
  • Acts as the principal liaison between PEPM and Global Leadership students and other University offices such as the Registrar, Bursar, ISSO, Housing, the Columbia Office of Disability, Columbia Health, Columbia Counseling and Psychological Services and other SIPA degree programs and other Columbia schools and departments. 

Curricular and Co-curricular Programming 

  • Works closely with the directors in the design and implementation of several major workshops, panels and conferences of high interest to the PEPM, Global Leadership and SIPA student body throughout the year and during the summer.
  • Serves as point-person in the effective delivery of such events, working with a wide array of co-sponsors including Columbia centers and initiatives, such as Institute of Global Politics, World Leaders Forum, Columbia Global Centers, Initiative on Central Banking and Financial Policy, SIPA Cyber Initiative, Center for Japanese Economy and Business at CBS, SIPA Concentrations and Specializations and student organizations.  
  • Works closely with other Columbia Offices, such as the SIPA Kellogg Center, University Event Management, SIPA AV, Columbia University IT, Columbia Catering and other vendors inside and outside of the University.
  • Works closely with the Faculty Directors on curriculum development for the Program.  Duties include organizing courses, recruiting instructors, teaching assistants and other forms of instructional support, and serving as the principal liaison with faculty. 
  • Tracks and analyzes data helpful in developing and refining the curriculum, including enrollment statistics, student surveys and alumni feedback.

Financial and Program Administration 

  • Assumes comprehensive responsibility for the annual budget for the PEPM and Global Leadership Programs.  Acts as the principal liaison with SIPA Human Resources and Business Offices, other University divisions, and outside vendors on all matters related to the Program???s finances and human resources
  • Reconciles expenses for the PEPM and GL budgets on a monthly basis
  • Supervises a Student Services Coordinator, several student employees and temporary staff as appropriate.
  • Manages alumni relations, including events, career and curriculum input, in coordination with SIPA Alumni Affairs office.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • A minimum of three years of directly related administrative experience required, including student services, event coordination, and staff supervision.   
  • Excellent interpersonal, administrative, and organizational skills, and a commitment to a collaborative work style.
  • Experience facilitating and coordinating meetings, networks, and committees.
  • Ability to create an inclusive work and academic environment and to collaborate with diverse students, alumni, and staff community.
  • Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently and set priorities.
  • Must be detail and deadline oriented. 
  • Must demonstrate discretion and judgment in sensitive matters, particularly around student discipline and student mental and physical health.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education preferred. 
  • Advanced degree preferred.
