Position Overview

Under general direction of the BRFSS Coordinator, plans, organizes, formulates and performs BRFSS research activities of a highly complex, scientific and technical nature. Participates in all phases of data collection for the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS). Designs BRFSS analysis of a broad scope to ensure the reporting of technically sound, innovative and high quality programs in BRFSS survey collection, including trends of core questions, and new survey modules. Organizes, maintains and make additions to current data, making maximum use of existing data sources. Consults with the Department and with other agencies in matters related to BRFFS data and statistics to improve the reliability and quality of the BRFSS program. 

Job Responsibilities

1. Serves as BRFSS Research Scientist.
• Plans, organizes, formulates and performs BRFSS research activities of a highly complex, scientific and technical nature.
• Participates in all phases of data collection for BRFSS survey.
• Monitors the collection of data.
• Ensures proper techniques for data preparation are employed.
• Analyzes and interprets BRFSS data.
• Reviews and refines methodology used in BRFSS analysis.
• Participates in other related assignments.


2. Designs BRFSS analysis of a broad scope to ensure the reporting of technically sound, innovative and high quality programs in BRFSS survey collection, including trends of core questions, and new survey modules.
• Performs highly technical studies testing and evaluating methods, data and analyses required for the various phases of programs to ensure that accurate, technically sound, and high quality BRFSS data are complete and available for IDPH, state and federal programs and for other uses.


3. Organizes, maintains, and makes additions to current data, making maximum use of existing data sources.
• Evaluates questions and research being proposed for future year surveys, makes modifications to improve the existing core questions.
• Coordinates, researches, and completes BRFSS projects to ensure accurate and timely reporting for publications and clients.
• Organizes, calculates and maintains BRFSS and related data for a wide variety of division projects.


4. Consults with the Department and with other agencies in matters related to BRFSS data and statistics to improve the reliability and quality of the BRFSS program.
• Cooperates with other public and private agencies in conducting statistics related analysis, surveys and research projects through consultation and fulfilling requests for BRFSS data.


5. Participates in and serves as technical consultant in projects involving statistical analysis, BRFSS data and preparation of special reports, graphical presentations, analyses, monographs, and publications.


6. Develops spreadsheets, databases, and other software applications for BRFSS work, within the Department.


7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a master’s degree in anthropology, biochemistry, chemistry, medicine, physiology, psychology, sociology, behavioral science, criminal justice, criminology, statistics, mathematics or a related science.
  • Requires three years of professional research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of the development and application of survey research techniques.
  • Working knowledge of statistical techniques and their application to health data.
  • Three years experience in preparing scientific data using SPSS, STATA, SAS or SUDAAN software.
  • Three years experience planning, organizing, formulating and performing research activities of a highly complex, scientific and technical nature.
  • Two years experience performing technical studies testing and evaluating methods, data and analyses.
  • Two years experience coordinating, researching, and completing projects to ensure accurate and timely reporting for publications and clients.
