Parkhurst Dining, Carthage’s food service provider, ensures that there are many great places on campus where students can receive tasty meals with a variety of options.
In the Campbell Student Union, students have a strip of restaurants including: Johnny’s Chicken Shack, Pacific Harbor, Red Zone, and the Flex Kitchen (which changes every semester based on voting by students). In Lentz Hall, there is a c-store that offers a fresh grab-and-go variety of food, hot or cold, called Lentz Do Lunch, and in Hedberg Library, there is everyone’s favorite coffee shop, Starbucks.
The cafeteria, or The Caf, in the Todd Wehr Center is especially dedicated to making students’ meals interactive, enjoyable, and, most importantly, safe. The staff in The Caf do a lot to make the student experience at Carthage unforgettable, including careful inspections for those with food allergies and collaborating with student organizations and the College to add fun and exciting meals to the menu.
Parkhurst takes measured steps for students who have food allergies or sensitivities and enforces each carefully. If your student has a dietary restriction, please have them fill out a dining accommodations request form or send an email to dining@carthage.edu. Once the form is filled out and submitted, it goes to the executive chef, who will contact the student promptly.
Cultural month takeovers
To bring representation and inclusivity to Carthage, Parkhurst collaborates with the Office of Equity and Inclusion and other student organizations for special events for heritage and cultural months — offering foods representative of different cultures. Past celebrations include: Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, Italian American Heritage Month, Arab American Heritage Month, and Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month.
Holiday-themed takeovers
To put the campus in the holiday spirit, Parkhurst hosts themed Caf takeovers to celebrate the holidays! Examples include: The Grinch Caf Takeover, the Nightmare Before Christmas Dining Event, and the Beetlejuice Takeover. Each event has special food items and interactive activities to give students something enjoyable to celebrate with.
Academic and office takeovers
Parkhurst also partners with the College for special events to give students delicious food and academic and organizational information. An example is the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive College Takeover, where the Office of Equity and Inclusion talks to students about different DEI associations around campus.
Students who studied abroad and returned to Carthage can also host their own Caf takeover, in which they present their favorite cuisine from the country they stayed in and talk about their time abroad!
Additional events
Parkhurst also takes other celebratory months and days to offer specialty menu items. Examples include: Earth Day, Chinese New Year, Cinco De Mayo, Vegan Day, MLK Day, National Waffles Day, and Late Night Breakfast, among others. The Caf is very involved with Carthage students in making their meals something to look forward to.
The From Home With Love program gives students the opportunity to get a food care package while at Carthage. Parents, families, and friends can purchase a package with specific themes to make students feel they have a home away from home. Such care packages include: Under the Weather, Custom Cake, a Celebration Package, and more.
Parkhurst at Carthage strives to give all students peace of mind when it comes to having something enjoyable to eat, and the best way to do that is to work directly with the students. You and your student can contact dining@carthage.edu with any questions or concerns. There are also QR codes posted around campus that take students to a Feedback Tracker. Students can comment on this form; Parkhurst takes in all feedback and considers every comment.
