RADIATION ONCOLOGY MEDICAL PHYSICS RESIDENT
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, Irvine -School of Medicine invites applications for a two-year Medical Physics residency training position. The position is suitable for an individual with a recent (within the last two years) Ph.D. in Medical Physics/Physics and a demonstrated interest in, and aptitude for, clinical radiotherapy physics. The incumbent will receive an academic appointment as an Assistant Specialist. A competitive remuneration and benefits package is offered. Preference is given to graduates of a CAMPEP accredited medical physics program. Other applicants have to provide evidence of compliance with American Board of Radiology (ABR) requirements (a minimum of a minor in physics at the undergraduate level, or equivalent) and AAPM report 197S.

The residency program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP).The program outline follows AAPM report 249 for medical physics residencies. It includes all aspects of clinical radiotherapy physics. The resident is expected to attend didactic lectures in radiation therapy physics, radiation biology, clinical radiation oncology, departmental and multi-disciplinary clinical conferences. Satisfactory progress in the program is contingent upon successful completion of periodic evaluations and presentation of several seminars throughout the training period. There is an opportunity to participate in ongoing clinical physics projects. Upon completion of the program, the candidate is expected to be ready to take the board certification examinations offered by the ABR in Therapeutic Medical Physics upon successful program completion. The Department offers a comprehensive suite of clinical radiotherapy services as can be found in an academic setting including IGRT, VMAT, SRS, SBRT, SGRT, IORT, HDR, Y-90 radio-embolization, etc. Imaging facilities (4DCT, MRI, PET-CT) for treatment planning are readily accessible and routinely used. Treatment planning facilities available are; 3&4D (with virtual simulation and image fusion capabilities), inverse and brachytherapy planning systems. A full set of physics equipment is available.

The UCI Medical Physics Residency Program is a CAMPEP-accredited program that prepares medical physics graduates to practice independently and to provide the highest quality patient care. The program is 24 months in length and offers in-depth training in all aspects of radiation oncology physics, including:
  • CT Simulation and Imaging
  • External Beam Treatment and Planning (3D and IMRT/VMAT)
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
  • High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy Treatment and Planning
  • Machine and Detector Commissioning and Acceptance Testing
  • Extended SSD and VMAT Total Body Irradiation (TBI)
  • Initial and Weekly physics chart check
  • Machine Quality Assurance-Linear accelerator, CT simulator, Image-Guidance System, Motion Management System, Brachytherapy System
  • Radiation Safety and Shielding
  • Ethics and Professionalism

    Successful candidates must work collaboratively within and outside of the Department. Primary responsibilities include:
  • Complete all clinical rotations, demonstrating clinical competency.
  • Perform assigned clinical responsibilities.
  • Submit monthly reports/logs describing clinical activities to the program director and current rotation mentor for the 24 months.
  • Make assigned presentations as in-service training or as research.
  • Regularly attend required clinical conferences, chart rounds, and clinical physics group meetings.
  • Complete all twice-monthly educational sessions with the program director.
  • Complete the assigned lecture-based courses.
  • Pass the comprehensive oral examination.
  • Complete the requisite number of procedures as listed in the proficiency list.

    Located at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in Orange, California, the Department of Radiation Oncology is an integral part of the NCI-designated Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Department is equipped with a robust blend of technology, including a dedicated HDR brachytherapy suite and an intraoperative unit. Further equipment upgrades are planned. The Department features a four-year Radiation Oncology residency training program and a two-year Medical Physics residency. The Department has an active Radiation Biology Division that currently ranks among the top programs in the nation concerning NIH funding. The Department participates in NRG/RTOG and SWOG and encourages investigator-initiated clinical and translational trials. The Division has undergone a transformative change with current and future site expansion in recent years.
