Job Description

Position: Unit Secretary / Monitor Tech
Reports to: Director of Acute Care

Possesses knowledge and ability to provide continuous ECG monitoring through assessment of EKG strips and accurate interpretation of cardiac rhythms and dysrhythmias interpretation including measurement of P-R intervals, QRS widths, and ST segment deviations. Possesses troubleshooting skills to recognize monitoring problems, identifies probable causes, and seeks solutions to correct the problem. Responsible for maintaining inventories, supplies, hardware, and telemetry transmitters in working condition and responsible for appropriately reporting malfunctions promptly.

St. Luke’s Hospital Criteria Based Performance Standards, Hospital Policies, Joint Commission Regulations and various other laws/regulations require that we assess the ongoing competency of our staff to assure that the staff maintains competency to perform their duties proficiently. Competency evaluation may include tests for knowledge, demonstration of skills and direct observation of performance.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Minimum of High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum of one year experience required.
  • Must exhibit excellent interpersonal skills necessary to exchange information with exceptional customer service with patients, families, visitors, and employees.
  • Knowledge of cardiac rhythms/basic EKG interpretation.
  • Certification as a Certified Cardiac Monitor Telemetry Technician (CCMTT) through the American Education Certification Association, or Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician (CRAT) through cardiovascular Credentialing International is preferred.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • Successful completion of PHC telemetry monitoring competency assessment within 30 days of hire is required.
  • Knowledge of standards, policies, procedures and organizational structure of the unit and St. Luke's Hospital.
  • Participates in ongoing education relative to role as defined by unit requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • The Monitor Tech functions include responsibility for accurate documentation and measurement of cardiac rhythms and ensures placement in the medical record.
  • Accepts responsibility for maintenance of the hardware, telemetry transmitters and maintenance of logs for tracking telemetry locations.
  • Recognizes and communicates timely pertinent patient information to the nurse, including changes in cardiac rhythm and dysrhythmias.
  • Serves as a resource person for staff members, students and float personnel in the identification and interpretation of cardiac rhythms and dysrhythmias.
  • Demonstrates and maintains skills to assess basic cardiac rhythms, including but not limited to pulse oximetry. demonstrate competency at time of hire (and annually thereafter) in accurate interpretation of cardiac rhythms and dysrhythmias and interval measurements.
  • The Unit Secretary functions include conducting the clerical transactions necessary to help facilitate the movement of the patient through the organization and beyond.
  • Acts as a resource to staff for clerical procedures and provides orientation to the secretary role as well as computer functions to all levels of staff. Responsible for ordering and maintaining an adequate inventory of forms and supplies.
  • Responsible for assigning, tracking, and cleaning telemetry transmitters on the unit(s.)
  • Responsible for assigning, tracking, and updating phones on the unit(s). Ensures all records are complete and kept secure following HIM and HIPPA guidelines, restraint data collection.
  • Maintains confidentiality while acting as a receptionist on the unit.
  • Screens and refers all incoming calls and visitors to ensure that accurate and timely communication is facilitated, and that the hospital is presented in a positive manner.
  • Sets up call system for patient care assignments and ensures that phones are functioning properly.
